The Myth That's Quietly Holding You Back

The Biggest Freelancing Myths That Hold Beginners Back

People sprinkle a little spice on their life struggles too. It makes the story more interesting. Over time, everyone adds their own version, and the story keeps passing from one person to another until it slowly becomes a myth. Nobody questions it because it sounds believable.

Beginners become the audience for these stories. They listen to experienced people, trying to avoid the same mistakes, but instead of gaining confidence, they often end up collecting fear.

People glorify struggle, and maybe that's not always wrong. But every struggle belongs to a different journey. Believing someone else's struggle without questioning whether it applies to you is unfair to yourself and disrespectful to all the hard work you have already put in.

Every beginner thinks they need perfection before they can start freelancing. Whenever someone shares their success story, they rarely talk about how many times they were rejected, how nervous they were before their first client call, how poor their communication was in the beginning, or how grateful they were to the client who trusted them first.

They usually show the finished portfolio, not the journey behind it. And naturally, beginners start comparing themselves with that finished version.

Then they begin doing everything they think will get them their first client. Another course. Another certificate. More projects.

But is that always what they need?

Maybe they need a course on how to stop criticizing themselves before they even start. While chasing perfection, they slowly forget the value of the skills and effort they already have.

And then comes pricing.

Think about it.

Before any client negotiates your price, you have already done it yourself. You lower your rates because you think that's the only way someone will hire you. But by doing that, you don't just undervalue your own work—you also make it easier for clients to expect quality work at unrealistically low prices.

Maybe the biggest myth isn't about certificates, prices, or portfolios. Maybe the biggest myth is believing that someone else's journey has to become yours.

Learn from people, question their advice, and then build your own path.

Because freelancing doesn't reward the person who follows every myth—it rewards the person who keeps moving despite them.
